Southwest Power and Light Announces Partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation on the Eve of Arbor Day
News Release
Houston, TX - April 28, 2010 - Southwest Power and Light is pleased to introduce its new Plant-A-Tree Plans, under which a tree will be planted for every 1,000 kWhs used by enrolled customers. Southwest Power and Light's Plant-A-Tree Plans will be added as part of its continued effort to offer innovative low-price electricity service in the State of Texas and beyond.
The mission of our Plant-A-Tree Plans is to promote our forests and in turn help provide the opportunity for future generations to camp, hunt, fish and enjoy our great outdoors together, noted Jeff James, VP of Marketing at Southwest Power and Light. ÒForests slow the rain and sediment that runs off the land, and filter out sediment, nutrients, and pesticides before they reach the water. This means more fish, and healthier aquatic life, in our lakes and streams.
On an annual basis, Southwest expects at least 18 trees to be planted per year based on an average residential customer's electricity usage in Texas (estimated to be at least 18,000 kWh per year in Texas). "The Arbor Day Foundation will oversee the planting of the trees in our forests, so customers can be sure the trees will be planted properly," noted Jennifer Keefe, Corporate Counsel of Southwest Power & Light.
Southwest Power & Light also seeks to build further awareness, protect remaining forests, and regenerate depleted forests through its partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation. Southwest Power and Light is the first electricity provider to offer a plan of this nature, with Southwest Power and Light once again leading the way with innovative, eco-friendly and affordable electricity plans. A single tree can have an enormous impact on our environment and wildlife. "If you plant a tree today on the west side of your home, in 5 years your energy bills should be 3% less. In 15 years the savings will be nearly 12%," as reported by Dr. E. Greg McPherson, Center for Urban Forest Research.
